The passage of time in a sportsman's life isn't marked by birthdays as much as it is opening days. When I calculate that I might have 20 or 30 more elk openers in me--Lord willing and the creek don't rise--the annual elk bugle takes on new meaning. Aspens turn to gold and elk only bugle for a short period each year and as much as I look forward to both, I can't help but feel a little melancholy when one more season passes in the unknown calendar of life.

Montana is many places in one. Most picture vast sweeping slopes crowned with snow capped peaks. And that is certainly a part of MT. But then there are the open plains and cottonwood lined rivers of eastern MT. There is the unrivaled mallard hunting on spring creeks, pheasants and Huns and sharptails along the Bighorn. Then there's the trout--virtually every stream has them--it's just a question of how many and how big.

Now as duck inns go, the Howling Coyote Saloon isn't your average prairie waterfowling destination. The location looks like a Hollywood set...keep waiting for Sam Elliott to mosey up. Nor is the food average. Arthur's son-in-law, Todd Edmondson, is a budding chef who served smoked ribs and chicken as memorable as the shotgunning. Some outfitters struggle with the notion that they're in the entertainment business...not this team.

Once a hunter has worshipped at the altar of gargantuan bucks, his life will either take a path to ruin or to ecstasy. For those who become obsessed by the lure of giant antlers, fortunes and marriages are sometimes lost. Beware the power of the beast for you must learn to control your desire to sell everything you own to become a deer bum.

The freedom to own guns--as many as you please--and to hunt vast acreages of public land is uniquely American. And the habit of sportsmen to come together to form consequential organizations to enhance their favorite species is also uniquely American. But maybe the underlying trait prompting such behavior is that Americans have always had a collective sense of what's right and what's needed--and they've never waited for the government to tell them that. So when I see groups like the Mule Deer Foundation, and so many other sportsmen's organizations I can't help but feel as though I'm witnessing the best of America. People who are volunteering to step up to make sure a piece of America that has meant much in their lives endures.
